Beijing's Hutongs

A hutong is an alleyway or lane. The hutongs of Beijing are one of its most distinctive features. Many of Beijing's ancient hutongs still stand today, and several have been designated protected areas. The old neighborhoods that survive offer a glimpse of life in the city as it was generations ago.

Compared with Western paintings, a Chinese painting is not restricted by focal point in its perspective. A traditional Chinese artist could paint on a long and narrow piece of paper or silk all the scenery that runs along the Yangtze River.

Visiting the Palace Museum

The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, served as Imperial Palace to generations of Chinese emperors during the Ming and Qin dynasties. It is located in the heart of Beijing. Construction on the palace began in the fourth year of Yongle's Reign in the Ming Dynasty (1406). It is one of the most complete imperial architectures in the world.

Visiting the Fragrant Hills

Located 28 km northwest of downtown Beijing, Fragrant Hills Park is just what its name indicates: sweet smelling with picturesque natural scenery. The best time to visit the park is in autumn (September–October), when the hills are alight with red leaves in a multitude of shades. The annual Red Leaf Festival attracts crowds of visitors from around the world.

Visiting the Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is located in the northwestern suburb of Beijing, about 10 km away from the downtown area. It has a total area of 290 hectares and three-quarters of it is water. The Summer Palace consists of the Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake, with over 3,000 palaces, halls, pavilions and corridors in different types of architecture. It used to be the imperial garden of the Qing Dynasty.

Visiting the Great Wall

The Great Wall, with a history of more than 2,000 years, is one of the architectural wonders in the world. It starts in the east at Shanhaiguan, crosses the rugged mountain ranges of Hebei Province, Beijing, Shanxi Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Shaanxi Province and ends up at the Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province. Many foreign travelers who come to China are eager to climb the Great Wall. Many of them love the Chinese old saying that “Those who have never been to the Great Wall will never be heroes.”
